Tamil Brahmin weddings are generally simple, less lavish, and often well-attended by many Tamil Girls friends and relatives. The practices performed by Tamil Brahmins are a bit different when compared to other communities. Their weddings can often be seen in Tamil Nadu, which is a Southern Indian State.
When a marriage is arranged, there is an exchange of horoscopes for both the girl and the boy. If the horoscopes are considered a good match, then a date is established for the engagement Tamil Matrimony to be conducted in the grooms house. By that time, priests from both parties gather in the groom's home and handle the marriage ties by exchanging plates carrying betel leaves, bananas, coconuts, flowers and betel nuts between both families. The groom's mother offers a silk sari to the bride and the groom receives cash or clothes from the bride's parents.
About 2 days before the wedding the bride's family conducts The Jaffna Thelichal Karappu where married girls from both sides water clay pots containing grains, kum kum powder and curd. A bathing ritual is conducted in some families by the parents, often on the Friday before the wedding. On the day before the wedding, the groom's side are welcomed with Nadaswaram and a tray carrying some offerings including fruits, flowers and sweets. Many rituals are performed in a Tamil Brahmin wedding, including the Vritham, Naandi Shraartham, Janavasanam, Nicchivadharatham, Mangalyadaranum, and Saptapadi.
Several casts have a Brahmin priest to officiate at the ceremonies. Some castes engage a Nalungu ceremony, where the bride sings a suitable song and welcomes the groom to the event. Time does not affect the charm of Tamil Brahmin weddings and their variety.
