Working a Boat Show To Your Advantage

When buying the first boat, the boat show is a great place to begin. It is also an excellent place for veterans to understand what's new, be it in boats, electrical or laws changing.

In an interview with Joe O'Neal, show director for the New England Boat Show in Boston, he talked about his main goal for the show. "The goal is," according to O'Neal, "to produce a industry for the dealers and the manufacturers to sell all their products. And also to produce a marketplace for the customer to come in and hopefully in one day or two days, view everything they need to view to make a decision. Imaginable the length of time, effort and money you need to place in to go from dealership to dealership trying to figure out what you want for a boat. So, it's actually a win-win situation for that consumer and also the dealer."

The show also offers a variety of seminars for example: knot tying, navigation, qualifying for a captain's license, radio communications, boating for ladies, etc.

Working the Showroom Floor Efficiently

At first glance, walking onto the showroom floor can be overwhelming. To get the most out of your entire day, you need to have an action plan. So, what is the easy get the most from a ship show?

Grab the exhibitor list as you enter the hall then walk around the perimeter from the show and see who's there. Find out which booths are busy. If a booth is empty is it due to there being no one there or is it not appealing to the visitor. Are the exhibitors all standing around talking to each other with hands within their pockets; are they eating, reading or actively engaging with potential clients? What kind of raffles could they be having? Does the raffle represent the company's product or could they be simply using the raffle to seize your attention? When the later, don't expect a phone call from their store for business.
Make notes next to the exhibitor's name of which you'd like to go back and talk to.
Check the agenda for the various seminars and make note of the ones you want to participate in. Make note of where the seminars are now being locked in case you need to get back there in a rush.
Once you've circled the place, then go back and begin speaking with those you need/want to see, grab their information (brochures, business card printing, etc), talk to others within the booth (both exhibitors and boaters) and climb on board the boats you have in mind. Be sure to take notes on the way to review later when you are home. In your own home, go through all the information you've collected as well as your notes. Investigate the boats online, call your boating buddies and/or inquire in various forums (ex. TheNauticalLifestyle.com or MassBaySailors group in Yahoo). Then go back again towards the show equipped with pointed questions.
