Baby Furniture - What Do You Really Need

Walking right into a baby furniture store can be completely unbelievable - there's a lot stuff! The majority of us do not have an unlimited amount of money to invest, and when you haven't had a baby before, it can be really hard to work out what's really necessary, useful, or basically a total waste of time. If you're planning to setup a gift register at the store, you need to make sure the stuff you put on it are helpful and practical. It's can all be incredibly confusing.

Let us take a look at some of the main items you are going to get in the infant store, so that you can possess some idea of what baby furniture you want or need even before you arrive at the store. That way you are able to concentrate on picking exactly which one you would like, instead of messing about deciding whether you actually want or need it.

Baby Bassinet or Cradle

A bassinet or cradle is used from birth until around 4 months. Basically, if the baby can roll from side to side, it's time for baby to maneuver up into a crib. Ensure the mattress fits snugly from the sides. You may even find that a padded bumper, sheets and quilt are included. The bassinet probably falls somewhere in the centre between necessary and unnecessary. If you are on a budget, you can certainly go without one. Having said that, I loved my bassinet and wouldn't have been without them. It's so convenient to be able to move baby around. I generally let baby sleep in his own room throughout the day, and used an infant monitor, then during the night wheeled baby's bassinet into my room. Mine could be rocked gently to assist baby go to sleep, and because it had been on a stand, it was easy to life baby in and out - I was recovering from a caesarean.

So my advice could be - if you're able to fit a bassinet into your budget, get it done. Perhaps it's an item that a few friends or family could buy for your baby shower.

Bubs and Grubs

Crib or Cot

Some sort of secure bed for baby is certainly required. Emptying your bank account purchasing one isn't required! You can purchase cribs in a massive range of styles - having a large range of prices to complement. Probably the main thing to consider is to make sure the crib adheres towards the required safety standards. Make sure that the mattress fits snugly against the sides from the crib. Another helpful features are: an adjustable base height, a couple of release mechanisms (not merely one, in case baby learns how you can do it!), lockable wheels, with no stickers that may be peeled off easily.

Crib Mattress

Many cribs include their very own mattress, and that's possibly the best option since it should fit the crib snugly. There are two types of mattress - inner spring/coil or foam. Generally, the innerspring type of mattress can last considerably longer, but is usually a little more expensive. It's worth buying some sort of waterproof mattress pad, to safeguard the mattress, but make certain it does not have any plastic quietly the infant will be resting on.

Bedding Accessories

It is really an area where you can begin to spend some serious dollars! It is easy to get carried away with the cute and gorgeous designs for baby crib bedding. Thankfully most cribs and bassinets use standard sizes, which makes things a little easier. One good strategy is to buy the necessary basics yourself, then invest the less necessary accessories in your baby shower celebration gift register. Apart from the basic sheets, I've always liked to have a bumper for that top quality of baby's bed - and ensure it ties on in multiple places, so more than one tie has to break before it may slip. You shouldn't use a pillow for baby, and even quilts or comforters aren't recommended - stay with ordinary blankets. You may also often get added extras, for example diaper stackers. Personally I've never found them of much use, but again, some of the extra will make good baby shower gifts.

Changing Table

If you're really low on cash, then you can probably make do with using your bed as a changing table, but if you are able to, this is something I highly recommend. Your back will definitely prefer it! My changing table was really a lot more like some dresser drawers, and nowadays, using the changing table part removed, it's still being used as drawers for my daughter's clothes. So it pays to think ahead and purchase a changing table that's practical. Also search for safety features, for example guardrails and maybe even safety straps. And of course it must be well padded! It's handy to have some kind of shelf where you can put items you're using, but personally I just put them down one end of the changing table and changed baby at the opposite end. Once baby got bigger, I made use of the top drawer.

Rocking Chair

This has to be around the "maybe" list. Lots of women recommend them, but personally I didn't have one and it never bothered me in any way. Making this going to come down to personal preference and your budget. With that said, you will need a comfortable chair to sit down in, particularly if you're nursing your baby.

Portable Crib

This really is one bit of baby furniture that got used a lot in my household! My son used to arrived at work with me when he was little, and that i used a transportable crib for his naps. It had been great when I went to visit friends and family, because baby was familiar with it and pleased to possess a nap once the time came. I additionally did not have to worry about baby rolling off someone's bed. It resulted in we could continue holidays and know that baby had somewhere safe and familiar to sleep. I used mine a lot which i wound up having to buy a second one when my daughter arrived! It's important, though, to spend a while ensuring the portable crib you choose is well constructed and safe. Make sure it cannot collapse easily, particularly if baby tries to climb out. Check there are no small spaces where fingers could get trapped, along with a collapsible padded base is very helpful.

Highchair

A higher chair rates not far from the essential end of the scale. The good news is you don't need one immediately, to help you put off buying it until a number of months after baby is born. Look for an adjustable tray, restraints of some type and perhaps even lockable rolling casters. Some models in addition have a reclining seat, so you can use it even when baby is still bottle feeding.

Car Seat

This is definitely essential - aside from ensuring your baby's safety, you're downloading copyrighted movies in many places if you don't have one. Newborns must travel within the back seat from the car, facing the trunk. Once baby is older, usually nearer to 12 months old, you can put baby in a forward facing child car seat. When your child is older again, between 24 months upwards depending on their size, you are able to change over to a booster seat. The major decision you'll have here is whether to buy separate, engineered car seats for baby and then your toddler, or whether to purchase a convertible model. Personally I usually had 2 separate car seats, mostly because all the consumer safety research I'd seen suggested that a specifically designed child car seat was more efficient within an accident. Thankfully I never tested that theory out! Construction and safety levels are constantly improving, however, so if buying a convertible model is where your financial allowance is, that's okay too.

Strollers

This is another baby item high appears to be a lot of choices. First you have to decide which style of stroller you would like, before even taking a look at individual brands. At some point you are going to want to transport your child, so you will have to buy something. You have to start by having a long, hard consider what you expect your movements to be with your child. Are you planning to consider baby jogging with you? Go over rougher terrain regularly? Or will you probably only put baby in a stroller at the shops? Would you like a pram that may later be converted into a stroller? Once you have a concept what type of things you will need to make use of your stroller for, a salesperson in the baby store will be able to show you in the right direction. You then have to think about what added features you might like - accessory bars, toy and activity bars, headrests, adjustable height, rain shields etc. Choosing the right stroller is probably likely to get you a while!

Baby Monitor

A baby monitor probably isn't necessary, but I always found it was great for reassurance. It meant I could be off in another area of the house doing something, but nonetheless be monitoring my baby's nap. Prices vary a lot, but it's probably easier to choose your monitor based on the features you're going to need, instead of price. If you are likely to move around a lot, make sure your monitor is portable. Do you want batteries or mains power? Would you like video monitoring as well?

Bouncer Seat

Again, this isn't necessary, but it's very useful! Babies love to watch everything that's happening around them, and it's easier on their behalf if they are raised slightly in the horizontal. You can purchase a variety of fancy bouncer seats, with everything from toy bars to battery operated bouncing. I only ever endured a very basic fabric bouncer, and many of times the toy bar wasn't even attached. Both my kids loved them, and the positive thing was which i always knew where these were! Very handy, specially when I was cooking dinner. What is important to remember is you should NEVER place a bouncer seat on a raised surface, they should always be placed on the floor or ground.
