The Advancement Regarding The Chopper
Subsequent to World War II, when the American soldiers returned home, they stayed loyal to the Harley Davidson company, but they were not satisfied with their new motorcycles. A lot of them enjoyed riding more exciting and lightweight motorcycles found in Europe. Some of them needed improvements to be made to the Harley Davidson brand of motorcycles. As a result, the fenders on the bikes were shortened or removed altogether to lighten the load. The front side fender was taken out and the rear one shortened to minimize mud and water splatter from the rear.
Because of this, the term bobber was coined and the chopper was created as motorcycle enthusiasts made efforts to customize the bikes. The plan would be to use these custom motorcycles for dirt bike racing. Any part that the riders felt were pointless was chopped off, and this process of chopping is where the term chopper came from. Windshields, big seats, crash bars, big headlights and front fenders were all chopped off and taken off. Forward-mounted foot pegs succeeded the larger footrests, and the fuel tank was made smaller, which all made for a lighter bike.
The angle of the fork to ground level was decreased by raking the front end of the bike which increased the bike's wheelbase. The handlebars were elevated up which became known as ape hangers. Each rider was creating a bike totally the way they wanted and anything that was unnecessary or too big was removed or made smaller. The rear tire was made fat and the front side one was made small. Industrious individuals began to fashion custom bikes and began building them to sell to those who didn't want to do the work themselves. While the craze caught on choppers began to be produced.
The craze for choppers slowed down for a couple of years, but fairly recently it seems to have made a comeback. Choppers built by top designers receive a high price. The chopper became extremely popular after it was seen in the film Easy Rider. Out of the chopper revolution came the Shovelhead FX Super Glide, which was one of the Harley Davidson models. While the idea that the chopper was more for exhibit, there is actually an improved performance in the raked front end. During high speeds, these motorcycles have a more reliable feel than the original factory suspensions, but there is also a drawback. It is weightier and less responsive at slow speeds and in curves.
If you want a custom developed motorcycle, then you need to look into buying a hand-crafted chopper. Even though they might not be easy to ride in certain situations, they do look very impressive. One type that is becoming popular is the low-rider type with a low frame to surface clearance.
