Although Igloo has been making metal water coolers since 1947 their first ice chest was not made available until 1960. The original Custom 60 Quart Cooler at this time was made with a plastic interior and metal exterior. Then in 1962 the company then produced and sold its first all plastic version.

Today although most homes owning the hard sided Custom 60 Quart Ice Chest quite a few homes also choose to have the soft sided versions as well. These second models are great to use when spending the day at the beach. Each of the various models are made using different materials.

When it comes to the hard sided models these are constructed from a material known as Ultratherm and which is a high density polyethylene material. As for the interior sides of these models they are constructed from polypropylene whilst the insulation is made of polyurethane foam.

As for the soft sided Custom 60 Quart Igloo Cooler these are made from either Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), nylon or polyester and which is the reason for them being so light to carry. As for the inside of these units they are made from PVC. Whereas polyurethane foam is used in the hard sided models with the soft sided ones they use a special insulation made from Polyethylene foam and is known as Polatherm.

As mentioned above if you want an Igloo ice chest to take to the beach or when going hiking for the day the soft sided versions are your best option. However, if you are intending to go camping for the weekend then the stronger although heavier hard sided versions of the Igloo Ice chest would be your best option.
