What you're trying to do is adding the neighboring information and alter the rhythm from the original melody line. Remember in jazz improvisation there's no a great way to go about that. jazz education is a brilliant way to get started. Experiment with additional tunes on jazz CDs. Use your hearing to dictate what notes to make use of. Soon enough you will discover other ways to improvise.
