Grace Williams - Everyone's seen them -older those who are aging gracefully. They're still capable of move their own health effectively that is at least pain and tension. They complete daily tasks with out a physical struggle. Though their joints be frail and stiffen easily, especially when arthritis occurs, these seniors are citizens enjoying life, and easy motion.
In comparison, lots of people find that as they age they're unable do what they used to do. Internally, their proprioceptors, those nerves supplying information for the nerves inside the body about the musculoskeletal system, become less potent. Due to this, older people lose some perception of their very own body position and movement. Their bodies become stiffer and more tense. Their balance is off-kilter, and everyday tasks become challenging.
In many cases, this build-up of hysteria started years earlier, and patterns of stiffness and restriction became entrenched within the muscles and mind. For example, the human body's reflexes are meant to catch us as we slip. We may think we are preparing your body to avoid it happening again, but actually when the muscles are already tight, the reflex will not work as well. Exactly the same idea applies after an injury. Even after it's got healed, the muscles round the injury are still protecting it like a suit of armor.
Body pains and aches often are more fashionable as we age. Pain in one area may begin a chain result of pain and avoidance that affects the whole body. It is just like having a pebble in the shoe. We alter the way the foot rolls when travelling to steer clear of the pain, which changes the ankle's movement, which changes the knee's movement. These changes will affect the hip and back, completely approximately the neck.
Grace Williams - The Trager® Approach can be a gentle approach to ease tension and pain, while improving flexibility. It suggests smoother movement and increased range without insisting or using force. It uses a mind/body connection by teaching the mind new, freer patterns of motion that release built-up tension in the muscles and tendons. When Dr. Trager is at medical school, he observed an older patient in the hospital who had been very stiff. While under anesthesia during surgery, this patient's body became very relaxed. After surgery Dr. Trager watched the anesthesia wear off and the entire body gradually returned to its original rigid state. This observation confirmed Dr. Trager's belief that patterns are held or formed within the unconscious mind, understanding that this mind/body connection is much more important than most people realize.
The Trager Approach uses self-help movements that Dr. Trager named Mentastics® (mental gymnastics). He was inspired from the waves from the ocean to get more graceful in his movement. While some think what seem like Tai Chi, it is actually free form movement with no steps to find out. Rather than exercises being performed at some point of day, they're simple movements to integrate into everyday life. For example, imagine you are round on the bottom like a rocking chair. Feel this by standing with your feet shoulder width apart. Then place one foot while watching other in the comfortable stance. Be sure your legs are soft, not locked or bent. Gradually shift unwanted weight forward and back a bit to notice the rocking. Slowly advance having an knowing of that sense of the rounded rocker bottom.
As the elderly tend to have problems with old patterns of stiffness and pain which have affected many parts of the body, the Trager Approach may be especially useful in helping them age gracefully. A person's age and condition can be quite a large element in how much tension and pain they experience. A person may maintain their sixties but the movement of their body might be similar to an 85 year old - or the other way round.
Individuals their eighties and nineties usually have fragile skin that tears easily. Holding patterns within the muscles less difficult more entrenched. Therefore, the Trager Practitioner needs to work much more gently. Sessions can be adapted if it is physically a hardship on an adult person to have around the massage table or when they can only tolerate sitting in a wheelchair.
Grace Williams - Aging gracefully is not a lofty ideal - it's a practical, attainable goal. Your body have greater ability to deflect tension and pain than many people realize. By introducing freer movement, we can resist most of the aches of aging and consequently enjoy bodies that move easily with time. Free, graceful, easy movement - such a gift!
